📏 Understand Cover Guide Lines

When designing your cover, you will see colored guideline borders that represent critical print boundaries. These lines help you place content correctly so nothing important gets trimmed, wrapped, or misaligned during production.

Each guide indicates a different area:

🟣 Purple line — Bleed area
Background images should extend past this line so your cover prints edge-to-edge.

🔴 Red line — Trim / Wrap line
This is where the cover will be cut or wrapped. Important elements should never cross this boundary.

🟢 Green line — Safe area
All critical content such as text, faces, and logos should stay inside this zone.

⚫ Dotted line — Spine area
Indicates where the cover folds around the spine.

🎯 Background Extension Rule

Always extend background images past the red trim line.

If your design stops before this line, your printed cover may show unwanted white edges after trimming.

If important content falls outside the safe area or inside trim/wrap zones, adjust your layout before printing.

🚨 Production Notice

Reprints cannot be issued for user-created design errors. If you are unsure whether your cover is safe to print, contact support before ordering.

📐 Keep Important Content Safe

All critical elements must be positioned at least 1/8 inch inside the safe area boundary.

This includes:

  • Text
  • Faces
  • Logos
  • Detailed artwork
  • Important graphics

Anything placed too close to edges risks being cut off or wrapped around the book.

🎯 Centering Elements Precisely

If you want artwork or text centered or aligned exactly:

Drag the object until alignment guides appear

Confirm placement visually before finalizing

🔤 Text Alignment Accuracy Tip

Text boxes align based on the box dimensions, not the text itself.

For precise centering:

  • Resize the text box to closely match the text size
  • Apply centered alignment in the text formatting menu

🔄 Check Your Cover After Page Changes

Adding or removing pages changes spine width and can shift cover positioning.

Any time your page count changes:

  • reopen the cover editor
  • verify alignment
  • confirm spacing
  • recheck safe zones

This prevents misaligned titles or artwork.

🎨 Use the Back Cover Creatively

The back cover is valuable design space. Consider using it for:

  • Mascot artwork
  • School logo or seal
  • Additional photos
  • Theme graphics
  • Student artwork

🧩 Use Pre-Designed Cover Templates

Creator Studio includes professionally designed cover templates you can customize.

To access them:

  • Open the editor
  • Click Templates in the left toolbar

Templates can be used:

  • alone
  • layered with text
  • combined with photos
  • customized with colors and graphics

🖥️ Designing Your Cover in Another Program?

If you are designing your cover in external software such as Photoshop or InDesign, you must use official cover templates and specifications to ensure correct sizing and bleed.

📕 Cover Do's and Don'ts Examples

✅ Do: Keep key design elements within the safety borders and utilize backgrounds to complete the design.

❌ Don't: Key elements of the design extend beyond the Crop/Wrap line.

✅ Final Cover Checklist

Before submitting your book, confirm:

✔ Background extends past red trim line
✔ Important content stays inside green safe area
✔ Text is properly centered
✔ Cover alignment looks correct after page edits
✔ Spine area is clear of critical content
✔ Back cover is complete

🏁 Final Cover Verification Reminder

Your cover is the most visible part of your book. Taking a few extra minutes to confirm safe zones, alignment, and bleed coverage can prevent printing issues and ensure a professional final result.
