What Does FSC Certification Mean?
FSC-certified paper is sourced from forests that are managed according to high environmental and social standards. This certification ensures that the wood pulp used in the paper comes from responsibly harvested trees, with a focus on:
- Biodiversity preservation
- Workers’ rights
- Long-term forest sustainability
It also guarantees that the paper can be traced through a transparent supply chain—from forest to finished product.
How Is FSC-Certified Paper Different from Recycled Paper?
FSC-certified paper typically uses virgin tree fibers rather than recycled content. While this might sound less eco-friendly, it’s important to understand that “recycled” does not always mean “sustainable.”
Here’s why:
- Recycled paper can vary greatly in its environmental impact. The way it’s recovered, processed, and manufactured can make a huge difference.
- In some cases, recycled paper processed using non-renewable energy sources (like coal) can have a larger carbon footprint than responsibly sourced virgin paper.
- The process of de-inking and reprocessing recycled fibers often requires significant energy, water, and chemicals. If not done sustainably, these processes may outweigh the environmental benefits.
Why FSC-Certified Paper?
The paper we use balances environmental responsibility with product quality. FSC-certified paper allows us to maintain the vibrant, professional print quality required for a high-quality yearbook, while ensuring:
- The health of our forests is protected
- We minimize ecological harm
While we do not currently use recycled paper, we believe FSC-certified paper offers a reliable and often more sustainable alternative.
We’re always working to evaluate and improve our materials and production processes with sustainability in mind.
